  1. Just got back from setting up my Ameristep Doghouse blind, putting down corn and setting up an LZ10, H55, W100 and S600 at a friends place. This is the back of a sub-division I have been hunting. Killed two there last year. I am always surprised how close the main deer trail is to the back of his house. Can't be over 25 or 30 yards!! Took a look at it today and it is being heavily used. My shooting window looks down this trail. I'll post pics as I get them. Had some big bucks on camera last year but never saw them when hunting. Maybe this year???? Will also be hunting on some Corps of Engineer's land on the river. Have to camp in the boat there. Good Luck everyone!! Bill

  5. I've been doing capacity checks on all my batteries on an annual basis. After testing the IR (internal resistance) I discharge them to the OEM recommended discharge voltage then charge them in a charger that shows how many maH were put into the battery. This has worked very well for me but by accident I discovered I had a few batteries that had lost considerable capacity sitting in the closet for a few months. One or two were completely flat. I only discovered this because my XTAR VC4 chargers show the maH put into the battery and it took a lot longer to charge these cells back up. In the future I will first recharge all the batteries to see how many maH are put into them before I do the capacity test. Found this on this site. Good rule of thumb on when to replace batteries. Quote- NiMH and NiCd belong to rechargeable batteries that have the highest self-discharge; they need recharging before use when placed on a shelf for a few weeks. http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/archive/the_secrets_of_battery_runtime Self-discharge increases with age, cycling and elevated temperature. Discard a battery if the self-discharge reaches 30 percent in 24 hours. Chart for NiMh batteries: The energy loss is asymptotical, meaning that the self-discharge is highest right after charge and then tapers off. Nickel-based batteries lose 10 to 15 percent of their capacity in the first 24 hours after charge, then 10 to 15 percent per month. Figure 7 shows the typical loss of a nickel-based battery while in storage. Self-discharge as a function of time I now have a standard to measure my batteries against. No use installing batteries in a build if they will exhibit unacceptable self discharge while in the field. Bill

    Bad day for slaves

    I only buy Vivitar 2800 flashes now. Have had real good luck. Only had 1 or 2 arriving unworking but the seller had stated that. I bought those for the circuit boards. Over the years I have had to replace a few transistors after much use in the field. I do agree Ebay seems to be more of a crap shoot nowadays. Bill

    LZ10 Build Vivitar 2800 Slave Flash with one of bigbassman's orginial flash boards. Bigfoot Trailmaster Control Board with Panasonic Programming (15 sec. delay for night pics so the flash will have time to recharge and 3 sec. shutter delay to give camera time to focus) Gary did it for me and it works great. Even with the delays the LZ10 takes blur free pics very quickly. The only way to go.   9. In December 2017 I fully charged and conditioned my stock of PowerEx Imedion 2400mah batteries before I went to Florida. Charged up some today after they have been setting in my closet and all are taking a little less than 560mah before they are full. That's about 560mah depletion just setting in the closet. Be sure to charge all your batteries before installing them in the cameras!! Bill

  11. Thinning out the hogs in our deer woods. My brother-in-law jumped them and they ran head on into me. Have to use shotgun since it is turkey season. Using 3 inch magnum number 2 lead shot. One shot was at about ten feet. Saw about 20 hogs total. Sure tearing up our deer woods. Bill

    Software driven analyzer

    May be worth a try. I do a lot of small battery testing at home. Reluctant to deploy cameras when the batteries have an unknown capacity after long periods of use. Thanks for the update!! Bill

  24. I just Discharged and then recharged all of my C cell Tenergy Premium and Centra LSD batteries I bought in 2012. I discharged each battery down to .9vdc at 1 amp. I then recharged them on an XTAR VC4 charger that shows the ending capacity. All the cells were either a little over capacity or about 200mAh shy of it. Looks like they are holding their capacity very, very well!! To discharge them I used Hobby Chargers and an Opus BT C-2000 charger. Really impressed with the versatility and accuracy of the Opus BT C-2000 charger!! Bill

In order to get a true indication of how the batteries are performing I like to discharge them (NiMH) down to .9vdc and then recharge them at 1 amp with a charger that shows the capacity of the battery after charging. I also check after the Discharge cycle to see how much capacity in mAh was in the battery before being discharged. Best test I know of to check the batteries. When not in use I keep the batteries fully charged. These batteries are used in my slave flashes and as external power for my Homebrews. They have seen lots of hours in the woods in all kinds of weather. Bill
