Buddy of mine has one, With remington shells the gun jammed alot switched to winchester no more problems I know it sounds goofy that it would not shot there own shells. But after switching its a good shooting little gun.

Check the paperwork and the barrel. I've got a Remington .22 --it's up north so I can't check but I think it is a 597. It will ONLY shoot long rifle shells. And then they have to be just the right length. Everything else, including those nice quiet CB longs won't eject on their own and it ends up getting jammed up. The shells are up there, too, but I'm pretty sure the ones that work are Winchester -like southtxhunter said.

You can still shoot the CB long's if you're looking for quiet but you have to manually eject and watch the next shell to be sure it goes in right. :2cents:

uummm

As a part time gunsmith i hate to tell this little secret but...

I t could be a shell problem but with most semi auto 22's a gummed up action is usually the culprit. I mean that just a shot of gun scrubber wont do it you need to brake it down and clean it thouroughly. I couldent tell you the money that cleaning 22's have made me. :D If you have properly cleaned it then check the ramp to make shure that it doesent have a burr on it. Or it could be a week spring.anyhow give it a good cleaning first. B)

deerhuntere1, the gun is brand new. It did it from the first time we loaded it. I hear Remington is having all kinds of problems with the spring in the clip, as it is too weak. Anybody have the Remington website that helps with the 597?? Thanks

k here is a link to remintons help section

remington help

As I understand it remington has had allot of problems with the issue that you describe. From what i have read they have beefed up the floor plate in the mag and put a bigger diameter spring to try to resolve the problem. Some of the 597's need to have the extractor replaced to completely resolve the jamming issue.

You will need to register to set up a account.

I hope that helps a little.

Yours must have a 22 long rifle. I have the 22 mag and don't have the problems you are having. Look at this site and do some reading it looks like this is a problem but have some tips on how to fix it.
