Knee Acting Up

Recommended Posts

Well a few weeks ago I did a dummy (surprise) I had really been hitting the eliptical hard all winter and losing some weight and had recently started walking about 5 miles once the weather got better (pain free too). Well dad lives almost 2 miles from home and I was in the routine of walking to visit and walking back home. Then the last time I did this several weeks ago after the visit with dad I came outside to a pretty heavy rain, I was feeling pretty good so I ran home (dummy) I got home fine and felt fine but the next morning my knee ached something fierce mostly underneath the knee cap. Since then it has been clicking and hurting like all get out, it does not seem to swell up at all. I cannot get on the elipitical nor can I do much walking. I called my family doctor today but have not heard back as of yet. I plan to kill a couple turkeys and sure hope I can get my way through this. Any ideas on what I hurt?

Can't say for sure. I'm 53. Had my left knee operated on on my 18th bday (old HS football injury). About 10 years ago I crashed a dirtbike riding with my sons and broke my right leg in 5 places and my ankle. When it healed my knee bothered me so I had an MRI and found out it was a torn miniscus. Had that repaired. I'm seeing a different Doc than the one that did the surgey now. Since then arthritis has set in and the doc tells me I'm looking at knee replacement. Also found out from him that miniscus surgery is only successful about 50% of the time. It flares up occasionally, especially when on concrete for long periods, and I can't jog at all any more. If I try to ride a bike or do the eliptical it flares up as well. I used to go every couple months and get a cortisone injection but it only lasted about a week so now I just put up with it. Best of luck with yours, hope its simple and non invasive.

Your symptoms sound alot like my right knee Dave. I haven't been to the Docs yet to get it looked at so I'm looking forward to see what your doctor says about your knee.

At our age it seems like things are easy to hurt and hard to heal. Hope they tell you to just take it easy and it will be better soon. Good luck!

I've had 3 surgeries on my right and one on the left. Gonna have to go to the Dr. to know for sure, but does sound like they'll need to trim a little cartilage out. That's something they can do with a scope, so you'll be off of crutches in a week or so, unless it's the meniscus, then it's like 8 weeks I think on crutches. If it's very bad though, at our age, they'll just take the meniscus all the way out and you'll be off of the crutches in a week. Will be climbing trees again in a month or so. :D My jogging days have been over for a while though, that's for sure.

I had my meniscus removed a few years a go. It is Like Gary said pretty well. My Knee would feel real tight at night and very warm to the touch. Sore to walk on and if they do remove it, Concrete floors are not going to be your Friend, they are a killer for me now, if I am on them very long.. .get it done though it is better now than it was but not the same as my other knee, the Joys of getting Older I guess :) Good luck .

Hey Dave ,

That stinks .

If for some reason it ends up a surgery . Call Jerry , he will have useful information on the subject . His brother had knee surgery last year and he did a ton of research on who does the best job.

Good Luck

Dave Y

Sound like what I am going through. I have an appointment with a specialist next month because my knees (the left one bad) get so tight through the day at work while I am on concret or the cushion mats we have infront of the machines at work. when I get home and sit in the recliner then get up it hurts sometimes to bend them. I have to make them pop so I can walk.

My left knee I hurt the meniscus 2 years ago. I had shots to both kness back on March 30th and it helped for a little while but know the left one just hurts most of the time.

Good luck Dave and keep us poste on your results.

Well Dave, hopefully nothing serious with your knee. I had multiple surgeries on both of mine. As your meniscus wears out sometimes all the loose stuff floating around needs to be cleaned out. If there are tears, it is no big deal to trim it up as long as there is still enough cartilage to protect your knee. I would cut out the running and stick with exercise that is less stress on the knees. Save your knees. I bought a good rowing machine a few years ago and use it every day. No weight bearing stress on the knees. Stationary bike if it doesn't hurt is good also. But I can't use one as my knees don't like it at all. Good luck at the docs.

Sounds like the meniscus has a tear. I was doing well until last weekend and now for the past week my right knee is bugging the heck out of me. I have not been able to do anything but ride my bike for over a week.

I have an appointment with the ortho on Thursday, I suspect the meniscus is torn but we will see. I did limp up the hill this morning and hunted for a turkey in ohio. I drug my blind, the decoys, a pack full of calls and my bow. Heard a few and it was a beautiful morning, enough action to keep me happy. View from the blind

I don't know how you do it Dave, work all night and hunt all day, do you ever just rest? That is a nice view though!

At least ask about using adult stem cells instead of a knife. I was doing some research and that looked pretty promising.

Well, the doctor told me my knee joint was just pi$$#& off. Told me there was a little arthritis and that I just had it really aggravated. Shot me with a dose of cortisone and told me to take it easy for a few days. I will give it tomorrow but sat and sun there are turkeys to hunt. Feels a little better already, hee hee
