Daughters First Deer

Recommended Posts

I took my 10 year old daughter out hunting, during the WI youth season last weekend, and she got to experience some good and bad of hunting.

On Saturday morning shortly after daylight we noticed another hunter about 150 yards away. The only problem with that was they were trespassing, so after a while I couldn't take it anymore and got down and confronted them. Long story short there were 4 people trespassing on the property so I spent the remainder of the morning dealing with them. I ended up just calling the sheriffs department and let them deal with it. While I was dealing with that I had left my daughter in our stand and when I returned she told me that she had seen a huge buck walk by the stand along with 2 smaller bucks.

Saturday night we hunted a different stand and about an hour before dark we had a 140 class ten sneak through an opening, but I couldn't get her setup for a shot before he was in the thick brush, we then watched him and a 120 class 8 fight and work scrapes. Sunday morning I let her decide which stand to hunt and we returned to the stand from Saturday night. At 7am a nice buck started working its way across the field, my daughter says its not as big as the other bucks I seen, this is when I realized I have spoiled her already. I got her setup and I am leaning into her to guide her through the shot when she tells me to back up because I was shaking and screwing her up. I laughed a little because I was more excited for her to shoot a buck then I am for myself. Once the deer stopped at about 100 yards I told her to shoot and she dropped it in its tracks. I have to say that was the most excited I have been hunting in a long time.

She is now completely hooked on hunting and told me that she now understands why I hunt so much.

Sweet! Congrats to you and little Pinch! Too bad you had to deal with trespassers, but sounds like you were able to salvage a fun weekend.

Congrats to Her that's a bruiser.

These kids are great to hunt with. My niece is the same way. We saw at closing Sat. night a nice buck, don't know the size but had a thick rack and couldn't get set up in time. Sun. morning surrounded by some nice size Doe and she wouldn't shoot she wanted to wait for that buck from the night before.

Great story and congrats to the young lady. That is a very nice buck and looks like a big bodied deer.

Congrats to you both on an awesome deer, one of the best 'proud Dad moments' there is! Your story sounds just like my daughter and I hunting, can't wait to show her this post.
