Lifepo4 Cells Last Reply Updated 2/8/17 (in Red)

I'm going add some of the size 26650 A123 LiFePO4 cells to my arsenal for camera external power. I went with the 26650 size instead of the 18650 size because of the additional capacity. They are not as prone to damage as 18650 cells when charging, are Unprotected but very safe, have a long life when stored, can be kept long term fully charged without harm. In addition they have a very Flat discharge curve (holds voltage steady over the discharge of the cell).

Here is one source (Note price is for two cells)

Holders

https://www.fasttech.com/search?26650%20holders

Many on Ebay as well.

I'll connect the holders in Parallel for a total voltage of 3.2vdc and a capacity of at least 4600 to 5000 maH depending on the capacity of the cells.

I'll use my Hobby chargers to Balance charge them as I do with my 18650 cells. There are also many 26650 LiFePO4 chargers out there as well. Note- The size, charging voltage and chemistry of the cell must be supported by the charger!!

A123 LiFePO4 Specifications (Download it here)

Note the Operating Temperature Range of (-22 deg F to 131 deg F) Cycle Life at 20 amp discharge rate is 1000 cycles!!

No matter whose cell you buy always refer to it's specific specifications for use, storage and charging!!

Example

This charger supports several different size cells and chemistries.

I'll post pics and data when I get it all completed.

One thing i don't care for about the 26650s is that they are a good bit bulkier than the 18650s(like a long c-cell)...and sometimes space is limited on certain builds

Yea your right about that. I'll still stick to 18650 for some smaller builds. The 26650 LiFePO4 chemistry is so much more reliable and safe to use that I have to give it a good try.

I have plenty of room in the Otterbox 3500 cases I am using. They are pretty deep.

I've used these for a couple of years now with no leaks, etc. Nice case and inexpensive.

You sure do make things hard on my wallet with all these battery/charger suggestions Bill :P

Do you think there would be enough room in a 3250 for an S600/S40, pipethrough, Bigfoot Board and 2 (maybe 3) of these 26650 batteries wired in parallel? Seems like these batteries would be perfect for this type of build if there's enough room in the case. I already have a Nitecore i4 charger that can charge 26650's (until I get my hobby charger ordered).

Check the Cell dimensions on page 4 of this specification sheet.

http://www.batteryspace.com/prod-specs/5161.pdf

Don't forget to also check the dimensions of the cell holders and how you want to connect them!!

Examples:

I have use 3250 cases as well with 4 C cells for the slave with no issues. Component placement will be important.

I think going with single 26650 holders would enable you to fit the cells in the cases to best utilize the available space.

Same holder as the one at FastTech.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/10pcs-New-Plastic-...QUAAOSw~gRVzAZD

I assume they mean Length when referring to Height- 79mm or 3 7/64"

Width- 29mm or 1 9/64

Depth- 32mm or 1 17/64

I have used this type of holder for external power with 18650 cells. Just bend the pins up a little in order to solder to them.
