I bought a cheap solar charge controller off of ebay. For the SLA batteries. And a charge controller for 18650s as well   I am about to head out of town. I will try to remeber to put a picture up next week. Works quite well as a  charger as well when fed with a constant source.

After getting back to this post.

Are you asking about what solar panels?

Or what charge controllers?

Or everything in general?

And what cameras and batteries are you attempting to charge?

I have been out of the loop for a couple years as well. Solar systems are pretty simple in general. You need a solar panel, a Schottky diode, a charge controller, and a battery.

For 18650 and 6v sla, I use 6v panels that put out 700-833mah. I forget what the watt rating of them are. I would strongly suggest using the biggest solar panel you can safely get away with hiding. That way you get maximum charge with even limited sun. And having the charge controller assures you need not worry about over charging. And remember solar panels are all but worthless if not in full sun for at least 4-5 hours at least a few days a week.

For charge controllers there are some cheap ones on Ebay. Search 6v mppt controller. I gave like $8 overseas for one that works on 6v or 12v and was pretty small. For the 18650 I ordered them off of Ebay as well and have a couple different versions. The biggest thing to watch with those is most are designed to be feed with a constant 5v so they will not function off of the 6v solar panel. I found some that work with up to 8v input and they work awesome with the 6v solar panel. On a side note, the 18650 charge to 4.2v. At one point I hooked a 3 aa in series holder up to it and it charged them to 4.2v and shut off just fine. I did a short search on Ebay and don’t see the 18650 ones I used.  But I didn’t look too hard. If I can figure out how to post pictures on here again without photobucket I will try to get some pictures up.

If you are using the Schottky diode to prevent discharging of the battery when there's no sunlight on the panel you may not need it if using a solar/charge controller.

Thanks to everyone.  Having recently moved to Alabama I will be exploring the area looking for new areas for deploying cameras.  Got spoiled on my Church Buddy's place in Oklahoma.

The backbone of my fleet of cameras is still the Samsung A503 and the Sony W100.  Thanks johnnydeerhunter for turning me on to the W100.
